Intrigued since childhood by castles and ancient structures, I never pass up an opportunity to travel to see a few. Many are in rural locales and have few visitors making them ideal places for quiet contemplation. Some are difficult to get to and require a bit of hiking but are well worth the twisted ankles, scraped palms and occasional encounters with bulls (fully armed with horns) to get to them. As you can see, the landscape is quite remarkable and worth seeing even if you aren't interested in ancient man-made structures. |
Solitary standing stones are interesting to chance upon as each bears unique carvings. The Irish countryside is beautiful and a great place to hike. Scotland, Wales, and England have their beauty spots as well. I'm particularly fond of the Orkney and Shetland Islands. |
